"New Investments in Mobile Technology Pivotal for Productivity Increase"

Investment in mobile technology is pivotal for any field operation to triumph nowadays, according to Zebra Technologies study on Future of Fields Operations. The study reveals that investments in mobile technology is top priority for 36 percent of organisations across the globe. Most of the investments will be made in innovative technology and business mobile devices such as touchscreen PDAs and wearable computers, to enhance employee productivity and customer satisfaction in various field operations.

Some of the key survey findings include:

  • Equipping front-line workers with enterprise mobile devices remains a priority to stay competitive

  • The survey shows today only 20% of organizations have most of their operations using business mobile devices. This is estimated to reach 50% in five years. In addition to that, respondents indicate most organizations intend to invest in handheld mobile computers, mobile printers and rugged tablets. From 2018 to 2023, handheld mobile computer usage with built-in barcode scanners is forecasted to grow by 45%, mobile printers by 53 %and rugged tablets by 54%. The higher levels of inventory, shipment and asset accuracy within the field operation are expected to lead to an increase in business revenue.

    A key driver of productivity, efficiency, and cost-savings in field operations is ensuring a replacement of traditional consumer devices for ruggedized enterprise devices. Nearly 80 %of respondents usually or always conduct a total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis on business devices prior to making a capital expenditure. It turns out that only 32% of respondents believe that consumer smartphones have better TCO than rugged devices.

  • Emerging technologies and faster networks play a major impact on field operations.

  • The survey shows seven in ten organizations agree that faster mobile networks will be a key driver for field operations investment to enable the use of innovative technology. The use of smart technologies such as sensors, RFID, and intelligent labels also plays a role in transforming the industry. More than a quarter of respondents continue to view augmented/virtual reality (29 percent), sensors (28 percent), RFID and intelligent labels (28 percent) as well as truck loading automation (28 percent) as impacting factors.
