Card Printers

Plastic card printers transfer an image from a digital file onto a card. They do this using sublimation or thermal transfer technology. They are used in many different sectors, as their main purpose is to identify people. They are simple and versatile machines that print on plastic cards and usually have RFID technology, a chip, magnetic stripe or barcode containing the recorded data.

Some of the leading manufacturers of PVC card printers available in our catalogue are Zebra, Evolis, HID, Datacard and Fargo.

What are PVC card printers?

PVC card printers not only print on cards, but also encode them. They carry out both tasks in the same process. The cards are usually encoded using technologies that allow the identification of the user. There are multiple identification technologies that can be applied to a plastic card, so the printer must have the appropriate encoding device.

Most of the plastic card printers we offer at Logiscenter are dye-sublimation printers. These use a ribbon containing the CMYK colours (cyan, magento, yellow and black) spread along the ribbon in stripes. The colours are printed one at a time in the desired area by applying heat. However, they usually replace the black colour with a protective varnish that attenuates the colours of the photograph. As a result, they produce high quality images, as they do not use any screening. There are printers that print in both monochrome and colour.

Another type are thermal transfer printers. These models, instead of printing directly onto the card, print onto a film that is glued to the card.

Uses of PVC card printers

This type of printer, as its name suggests, is used to print on plastic cards. They are widely used in any sector that needs to identify its employees, as the cards allow, by means of their magnetic stripe, to quickly identify permits or any other information collected. This helps to streamline the flow of inputs and outputs, as well as minimising possible errors.

Another area where PVC card printing is commonly found is in retail outlets. These printers are very useful for offering loyalty programmes or gift vouchers, among others.

Types of PVC card printers

At Logiscenter we differentiate between two types of plastic card printers:

  • Mid-range card printers: they fulfil basic functionalities, such as single-sided printing or encoding options, among others. This, combined with their ease of use, makes them ideal for on-the-spot accreditation and identification applications.
  • High-capacity card printers: these printers have more advanced functionalities, such as double-sided printing, automatic feeding or the application of overlay varnishes (clear and hologram), among others. In addition, they have higher capacity and printing speed.

Consumables for PVC card printers

Every plastic card printer needs one main consumable to work properly: the PVC cards themselves. These are the most common types of plastic cards you can find:

  • RFID or proximity cards: data is recorded on the chip and does not require physical contact with the reader. They are ideal for access and presence control.
  • Smart cards: the data is recorded on the chip (memory or microprocessed). Some memory chips feature a means of encryption and write protection. They are ideal for digital signature and access control.
  • Magnetic stripe cards: data is recorded on the magnetic stripe and enables personalisation. They are ideal for loyalty cards, due to their low price. There are two types of magnetic stripe cards:
    • Low coercivity (Lo-Co) stripe: they are recommended for situations where cards expire or have little use, because the durability of their stripe is lower. Some examples are loyalty applications, promotional or gift cards, as well as for issuing large quantities due to the reduced production cost of each card. Their magnetic stripe is usually brown in colour.
    • High coercivity (Hi-Co) stripe: require stronger magnetic force to encode and erase. It is suitable for continuous use, in applications with a long period of validity (two years) without the need for renewal. It is also useful in environments subject to high radiation, magnetic fields or aggressive agents. It is usually applied in access and presence control. Its magnetic stripe is black.
  • Bar-coded cards: the bar code (one- or two-dimensional) is the information encoding element. They can encode a variety of information on PVC cards.

Another consumable to take into account are the ribbons, as they are essential in dye sublimation printing. There are several accessories to take into account to complete the use of PVC card printers, such as card holders or magnetic stripe and card chip readers. Also, don't forget the need to purchase software to customise the design of the cards.
